Why Moonlight Resonance(溏心風暴之家好月圓) Is The Show Of A Lifetime

I have a confession to make – I think I’m addicted to my trusty TVBAnywhere+ app! It’s conveniently downloaded on my Smart TV for binge-watching over the weekend, and on my smartphone to keep me entertained as I commute to and back from work each day. But really, you can’t blame me for being addicted; there’s the largest variety of TVB entertainment in Singapore on this one, single platform!

Think action-packed crime dramas, heart-wrenching romance series, and comedic entertainment programs. So long as you name it, the TVBAnywhere+ app has got it with over 40,000 hours-worth of HK content – and this number is still growing! But personally, across a plethora of Hong Kong TV series, my heart always leans towards riveting family dramas, those with a chock-full of family feuds and bewitching betrayals.

Cue Moonlight Resonance (溏心風暴之家好月圓), an award-winning TVB series that easily lands itself as the family drama of a lifetime, at least for my personal list! This show has a special place in my heart, for it speaks volumes of the love and bond a family shares – regardless of the external forces that threaten to tear them apart.

This bittersweet drama revolves around the rivalry between two families (the female protagonist and her ex-husband, no less!) as they fight for ownership over their mooncake business and children. I’ll share with you my top reasons why it climbs as the most unforgettable TVB drama, but you’ll have to watch it to understand what the hype surrounding Moonlight Resonance (溏心風暴之家好月圓) is all about!

A highly-anticipated sequel to award-winning series Heart of Greed (溏心風暴)

If you’ve not heard of Heart of Greed (溏心風暴) before, you’re missing out! Clinching the prestigious title of TVB’s ‘Best Drama’ in the 2007 TVB Anniversary Awards, the series sits as one of the highest-rated Hong Kong dramas thus far. It was due to Heart of Greed’s various accolades and reviews that spurred the sequel I’m raving about: Moonlight Resonance (溏心風暴之家好月圓).

Featuring the same star-studded cast as its predecessor, Moonlight Resonance (溏心風暴之家好月圓) unravels a heart-warming tale of a humble woman Chung Siu-Ho (Lee Sze-Kei李司棋), and her former husband Kam Tai Cho (Ha Yu 夏雨), as they battle over custody of their children and branding rights to their joint mooncake bakery.

Here’s the juicy backstory: Tai Cho had previously committed adultery with Siu-Ho’s best friend, Yan Hung (Michelle Yim 米雪). Upon divorcing Siu-Ho, Tai Cho and Yan Hung brutally tore the family apart by claiming the rights to the mooncake business and guardianship over two of Siu-Ho’s children. Talk about a major betrayal! It was so devastating to see Siu-Ho get attacked multiple times that I told myself from the start that I’m definitely sticking to Team Siu-Ho.

From then on, the drama centres around Siu-Ho as she attempts to rebuild the life that the merciless duo so brutally destroyed, while dedicating her efforts to raising her remaining children. But, here lies the twist: redemption enters the story as Tai Cho, overwhelmed with guilt, decides to repent and wishes to reconcile with his former family. But of course, Siu-Ho refuses to let him do so.

The path to their family reunion isn’t an easy one, for the characters are each plagued with trials and tribulations that left me feeling sorry for them. Needless to say, I was also invested in figuring out the sinister schemes the antagonists would be plotting next – but I’ll stop here before giving away any spoilers on these!

Well-developed characters with heart-wrenching backstories

My favourite character in the show is undoubtedly Michelle Yim (米雪). She takes on the role of Yan Hung, a manipulative villainess hell-bent at wrecking Siu-Ho and Tai Cho’s attempts at reconciliation; she even plotted against her children! Don’t worry, even though she’s my favourite character, I’m still all in for Team Siu-Ho. It’s just that Michelle Yim’s (米雪) acting was truly exceptional, as I found myself greatly detesting her throughout the series.

Alas, I gleaned insight into Siu-Ho’s tragic backstory, which tugged at my heartstrings. Previously, she was a pitiful single mother abused by her ex-husband, even to the point of almost choosing suicide. Then, she meets Tai Cho, who she immediately falls in love with at first sight. Now that her life has changed for the better, it’s inevitable that she would do anything to sustain the new life she worked so hard to create – even if it might interfere with the lives of others.

Additionally, Tai Cho’s change of heart was also a pleasant surprise for me. While it may be suspicious to see a two-timing spouse turn over a new leaf, I was actually cheering on for him from the sidelines. What better way to conclude the story than with him reuniting with Siu-Ho for the sake of his beloved children and the loving family? Did he ultimately achieve the happy ending he yearned for? You’ll have to find out yourself!

A highly forbidden romance between step-siblings

Romantics at heart, it’s time to get your fill of adorable scenes between step-siblings Wing Ho (Raymond Lam 林峯) and Chau (Linda Chung 鍾嘉欣)! With various entertaining banters and romantic gestures shared between both characters, you’ll surely be rooting for this couple, a ship you’re all ready to set sail.

However, it’s a forbidden romance between these two characters. Chau is Yan Hung’s daughter while Wing Ho is the son of Siu-Ho – they aren’t allowed to pursue a relationship together. Sadly, both parties are forced to distance themselves from each other, and Chau enters a new phase of life with her handsome colleague. Although Chau remains his first love, Wing Ho can only pine for her from afar. How heartbroken Wing Ho must be – I can’t help thinking whether it would be smooth sailing for these star-crossed lovers, if not for the entrance of Yan Hung into Siu-Ho’s family!

While the pair are truly a match made in heaven, life throws them various curveballs that they must overcome if they are to go steady. Will love eventually conquer all, and the pair finally attain their well-deserved fairytale ending? Let’s stay hopeful that Wing Ho and Chau’s love story pans out for the best.
