3 Light Hearted Comedies For Your 2022 Chinese New Year

3 Light Hearted Comedies For Your 2022 Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year has arrived, and it’s yet another season of festivities and joy. Amidst the catching up, the exchange of red packets and endless mahjong sessions, you will always find a group of people crowded around the television, catching a good series while talking about life. And without a doubt, that’s where you’ll find me and my relatives too as we spend hours watching fun CNY shows and updating each other on how our year has been.

But if you are like me and you’ve grown tired of seeing the same old show on the screen for the past few years, let me share some of the series that I’ve caught with my relatives during the start of CNY.

TVB’s light-hearted comedies are entertaining as it is thrilling while still allowing for banter and conversations to be had. If that is something that sounds good to you as well, here are some series you can watch while catching up with your loved ones during this CNY season!

1. Armed Reaction 2021 (陀槍師姐2021)

Armed Reaction 2021 (陀槍師姐2021)

It was nothing short of fate that has brought Inspector Tai On-na (Jessica Hester Hsuan 宣萱), seasoned armed lady cop Chan Sam-yuen (Joyce Tang 滕麗名) and SDU Prince Mung Hon-sam (Moses Chan 陳豪) together. After a case is solved by this trio, their superior, Wai Chin-chiu (Hui Shiu Hung 許紹雄), assigns On-na (Jessica Hester Hsuan 宣萱) to Cold Case Special Investigation Unit. Under Hon-sam’s (Moses Chan 陳豪) command, On-na (Jessica Hester Hsuan 宣萱) and a contingent of police officers with “special characteristics” investigate cold cases that outsiders are not interested in. Still, things seem to take a turn as Hon-sam (Moses Chan 陳豪)  discovers that On-na (Jessica Hester Hsuan 宣萱) has a fear of guns during a tense encounter when she was taken hostage, as Hon-sam (Moses Chan 陳豪) also grows closer to his colleague, possibly causing a few sparks to fly… And if things can’t get any worse on the job, On-na (Jessica Hester Hsuan 宣萱) chances a run-in with Lau Tat-wah (Him Law 羅子溢), a tutorial student she knew from before. Life doesn’t seem to give them both a break, however, as Tat-wah’s (Him Law 羅子溢) family was killed and he went down the path of a gangster. Overcome by strong guilt, can On-na (Jessica Hester Hsuan 宣萱) overcome the challenges of her fear of guns, find her confidence again and become a model female cop?

Comedic chops, romantic happenings and an action-filled plot, all these coming together to keep me on my toes while being thoroughly entertaining at the same time. Definitely a series you would catch during the Chinese New Year celebrations when you inevitably crowd around the television with your relatives and loved ones.

2. My Life As Loan Shark (街坊財爺)

My Life As Loan Shark (街坊財爺)

Tai Kam-chai (Kent Cheng 鄭則仕), known as Loan Shark by those around him, is a rugged ruffian that utilises dubious money and interest collection methods to take advantage of those that borrow from him. His wife, Rose Chu’s (Maggie Shiu 邵美琪) disdain and disapproval does not change his mind whatsoever. Then comes along Police Inspector Ching Yue-sum (Lai Lok Yi 黎諾懿), a righteous and moral individual who has taken it his mission to curb Kam-chai’s (Kent Cheng 鄭則仕) brazen loan shark activities. Nothing seems set to change until an almost supernatural encounter during a thunderstorm shocks Kam-chai (Kent Cheng 鄭則仕) into a change of heart. He seemingly turns over a new leaf and learns to use his wealth for good, becoming known as ‘Everybody’s Generous Papa’. But will everyone be as accepting, and will Kam-chai (Kent Cheng 鄭則仕) be able to help everyone like he wishes to?

They may call him ‘Generous Papa’ in the series, but I’ve known Kent Cheng (鄭則仕) as one of the comedic godfathers in Hong Kong dramas. He doesn’t fail to disappoint again, showing his range of emotional acting in touching scenes while delivering hilarious one-liners with great timing in funnier scenes. Coming along with a unique plot to place his character in difficult situations, I found myself crying with laughter and sharing strong moments with him and the cast.

3. My Ages Apart (誇世代)

My Ages Apart (誇世代)

All seemed well between well-regarded banking mentor, Sung Chung-kei (Bobby Au Yeung 歐陽震華), and banking mentee Kwong Kong-sang (Moses Chan 陳豪). However, in a bid to move up the corporate ladder, Kong-sang (Moses Chan 陳豪) deliberately transfers Chung-kei (Bobby Au Yeung 歐陽震華) out, but the plane Chung-kei (Bobby Au Yeung 歐陽震華) takes crashes, and he finds himself trapped inside the body of a young millennial named Bao Pau (James Ng 吳業坤). As if the supernatural occurrence wasn’t enough, he has to live with Bao Pau’s (James Ng吳業坤) aunt, Bao Mei-na (Maggie Shiu 邵美琪), and even finds Kong-sang (Moses Chan 陳豪) flirting with heiress Sheung Ho-yiu (Ali Lee 李佳芯) and his wife Ling Kit-yu (Kristal Tin 田蕊妮) when he finds his way back home. With nothing to his name and no one believing his story, he has a chance encounter with 60-year-old Lau Hang (Louis Cheung 張繼聰) whom he discovers has had the same experience. Together, they try to find a solution to get everything back to normal, whilst a never ending power struggle threatens to upend everything Chung-kei (Bobby Au Yeung 歐陽震華) has worked hard for. Will he get back to his own body, get together with his wife and get his former life back, or will he lose everything because of a supernatural accident?

An award-winning drama with twists and turns, a star-studded cast and non-stop comedic moments, this supernatural comedy had me glued to the screen. Definitely a series I would introduce to my relatives when they come over for Chinese New Year and have a laugh or two with, and one I know you’ll enjoy with your family too!

Conclusion

Well, that’s my Chinese New Year and the series I’ve caught, ones that have been the source of much topic and conversation between my relatives and I. I hope that it’ll be an equally entertaining time for you and your relatives when you catch these series together as they come over to find you for CNY this year. Of course, you probably won’t finish the whole series in one sitting (my relatives and I most definitely did not too) but you just might have introduced them to different HK dramas that they can now catch in their own free time.
